Hiking vibes
From Habkern via the Gemmenalphorn to the Niederhorn
The hike starts in Habkern and initially leads through the unspoiled landscape above the mountain village. You will hike steadily uphill towards Bäreney, crossing alpine pastures and traversing moorland and heath landscapes. As you gain altitude, the landscape opens up and the view of the surrounding mountain world becomes ever more impressive.
Next follows the ascent to the Gemmenalphorn at 2,061 m a.s.l. The path leads through a fascinating karst landscape and across scenic mountain slopes. The area is also known for its wildlife: with a little luck, you can spot ibex here. From the summit, a wide view opens up over the Sieben Hengste, the Hohgant, and the Seefeld region.
The route then continues along the scenic ridge to the Burgfeldstand, the highest point of the hike. This section is among the most spectacular of the entire tour. Again and again, expansive views open up of Lake Thun as well as the famous triumvirate of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. The high-altitude trail between Niederhorn and Gemmenalphorn was even awarded a gold medal as the most beautiful hiking trail in Switzerland.
From the Burgfeldstand, you continue along the ridge towards the Niederhorn. Shortly before reaching your destination, you pass the small Hohseil-Seeli, which can mirror the surrounding mountains in calm weather. At the Niederhorn, the hike ends with another impressive panorama of Lake Thun and the Bernese Alps. From here, you can conveniently take the Niederhornbahn back down to the valley.
The tour combines a long ascent from Habkern with an exceptionally scenic ridge hike and is particularly suitable for experienced hikers with good physical condition and sure-footedness.
