Ausserberg to Hohtenn

The hike starts at the Ausserberg train station and leads initially through the sunny Valais landscape above the Rhone valley. Soon after, the trail follows the historic Lötschberg-Südrampe. Along the way, wide views of the valley and the surrounding mountains open up time and again.

A special highlight are the Suonen, the typical historic Valais irrigation channels. These run partly in spectacular fashion along the slopes and testify to how the dry, sunny flanks have been irrigated for centuries. The over 100-year-old Lötschberg mountain railway line also accompanies the hike repeatedly with impressive engineering structures.

Continuing along varied paths, the route heads towards Rarnerchumma and through the Bietschtal. Here, the imposing railway bridge and the view of the railway line provide another highlight. The hiking trail finally continues slightly up and down through the unique landscape of the Lötschberg-Südrampe before reaching Hohtenn.

A visit to the Bärgbeizi Rarnerchumma is an absolute must. Here you can enjoy Valais specialties in a warmly furnished little inn with a top-notch panorama.
